One With You Sylvia Day Review

Gideon and Eva are two characters whose visceral need for one another has driven their story forward over four unforgettable instalments, over hundreds of pages of mouth-watering exchanges and heart-wrenching confessions, and their grand finale is nothing less than breathtaking. By not holding back any punches and truly saving the best for last, Sylvia Day has given these characters the ending they’ve always deserved, the ending I’ve always hoped for, the perfect conclusion to a story that remained poignant and electrifying until the very last page. And even though nothing could have ever truly prepared me for the end of a series that has meant so much to me for so long, a spectacular send-off such as this helps in no small measure.

"New York swallowed everything that came into it, while Gideon had the city on a gilded leash. And he was mine. Even with my ring on his finger, I still sometimes struggled to believe it."

We have watched Gideon and Eva’s blooming relationship survive countless trials and tribulations in a relatively short time span, their respective pasts relentlessly trying to pull them apart and diminish all they’ve found in each other. But while each hurdle they overcame has only brought them closer to one another and strengthened the unique bond between them, it has also made them increasingly aware of each other’s needs and all the difficulties still lying ahead of them. We have seen them both come to terms with being abuse survivors, with the aftereffects of those traumas and all the ways they shaped the people they’ve become, but learning together how to have a functional, healthy relationship still remains their greatest challenge.

"Had I demanded more of him than I had of myself? I was shamed by the possibility that I’d pushed him to evolve while I had remained obstinately the same."

Three months have passed since they first met, yet Gideon and Eva’s bond has morphed quickly from one of carnal desire to emotional co-dependency, and as devoted and protective as they have become towards one another, promising all their tomorrows to one another and vowing to slay each other’s demons carries little meaning until they both make the necessary changes in themselves and thus break free from their own emotional shackles. With remarkable self-awareness and care for the emotional wellbeing of the other, the young couple continues to take great strides towards learning not only what the other needs of them, but also what changes they need to make in themselves in order to achieve long-term happiness. And they are prepared more than ever to give their all, make all the compromises needed to see a future in each other’s arms.

“It’s not just Gideon Cross anymore. It’s not even Gideon Cross and wife. We are Gideon and Eva Cross, and you need to let me live up to that.”

We witness a great shift in our heroine, Eva, in this last chapter of their story, as she comes to terms and learns to embrace her new role as wife and first line of emotional support to a powerful man like Gideon Cross. We see an independent, headstrong young woman let go of her need for control and independence in favour of a more balanced, ‘partners-in-crime’ approach to marriage, where she seamlessly steps into the role of protector when the need arises. Her new-found confidence and unwavering trust in their love offers Gideon the very thing he never had in his life, the only thing he’s been desperately praying for ever since a monster stole his innocence from him—someone to believe him, someone to always have his back.

"I needed him to know he could drop his guard, take a breath, and I could protect us both."

As they tackle old and new threats to their happiness, Ms Day never loses hold of these characters’ primary story arc, focusing on Gideon and Eva’s strengths and vulnerabilities equally in order to bring them closer and closer to achieving a functional relationship between them. With impeccable character development and no attention spared in showing every critical step in the growth of their relationship, we watch this couple grow from two broken, highly self-sufficient individuals to two people capable of letting go of their pasts, of drawing strength from one another, and becoming intrinsic parts of a whole.

"I hadn’t known Eva was out there, had been afraid to even dream of finding the one person in the world who would accept and love every facet of me."

An epic finale that went beyond my wildest dreams, each word heavy with meaning, each scene a crucial puzzle piece in a picture that kept coming together with striking force until the very last page, leaving me literally quivering in its aftermath. I remain incapable of letting go of Gideon and Eva just yet as I slowly come to terms with all the unexpected, touching turns in their story, but I am smiling through my tears, grateful for the way this book truly honoured them for the iconic characters they will forever remain in my eyes. Bravo!

"I'm that guy for you, Eva. Every milestone, angel. Every rite of passage . . . everything. And you're that girl for me."

An Excerpt Sylvia Day One with You

Chapter 1

New York was the city that never slept; it never even got sleepy. My condo on the Upper West Side had the level of soundproofing expected in a multimillion-dollar property, but still the sounds of the city filtered in—the rhythmic thumping of tires over the well-worn streets, the protests of weary air brakes, and the nonstop honking of taxi horns.

As I stepped out of the corner café onto always-busy Broadway, the rush of the city washed over me. How had I ever lived without the cacophony of Manhattan?

How had I ever managed living without him?

Gideon Cross.

I cupped his jaw in my hands, felt him nuzzle into my touch. That show of vulnerability and affection cut right through me. Just hours before I’d thought he might never change, that I would have to compromise too much to share my life with him. Now, I stood in the face of his courage and doubted my own.

Had I demanded more of him than I had of myself? I was shamed by the possibility that I’d pushed him to evolve while I had remained obstinately the same.

He stood before me, so tall and strong. In jeans and a T-shirt, with a ball cap pulled low over his brow, he was unrecognizable as the global mogul the world thought it knew but still so innately compelling he affected everyone who walked by. In the corner of my eye, I noted how the people nearby glanced at him, then did a double-take.

Dressed casually or in the bespoke three-piece suits he favored, the power of Gideon’s leanly muscular body was unmistakable. The way he held himself, the authority he wielded with faultless control, made it impossible for him to ever fade into the background.

New York swallowed everything that came into it, while Gideon had the city on a gilded leash.

And he was mine. Even with my ring on his finger, I still sometimes struggled to believe it.

He would never be just a man. He was ferocity sheathed in elegance, perfection veined with flaws. He was the nexus of my world, a nexus of the world.

Yet he’d just proven that he would bend and yield to the breaking point to be with me. Which left me with a renewed determination to prove I was worth the pain I’d forced him to face.

Around us, the shop fronts along Broadway were reopening. The flow of traffic on the street began to thicken, black cars and yellow cabs bouncing wildly over the uneven surface. Residents trickled onto the sidewalks, taking their dogs out or heading toward Central Park for an early morning run, stealing what time they could before the workday kicked in with a vengeance.

The Benz pulled up to the curb just as we reached it, Raúl a big shadowy figure at the wheel. Angus slid the Bentley into place behind it. My ride and Gideon’s, going to separate homes. How was that a marriage?

Fact was, it was our marriage, though neither of us wanted it that way. I’d had to draw a line when Gideon hired my boss away from the advertising agency I worked for.

I understood my husband’s desire for me to join Cross Industries, but trying to force my hand by taking action behind my back…? I couldn’t allow it, not with a man like Gideon. We were either together—making decisions together—or we were too far apart to make our relationship work.

Tilting my head back, I looked up into his stunning face. There was remorse there, and relief. And love. So much love.

It was breathtaking how handsome he was. His eyes were the blue of the Caribbean, his hair a thick and glossy black mane that brushed his collar. An adoring hand had sculpted every plane and angle of his face into a level of flawlessness that mesmerized and made it hard to think rationally. I’d been captivated by the look of him from the moment I first saw him, and I still found my synapses frying at random moments. Gideon just dazzled me.

But it was the man inside, his relentless energy and power, his sharp intelligence and ruthlessness coupled with a heart that could be so tender…

“Thank you.” My fingertips brushed over the dark slash of his brow, tingling as they always did when they touched his skin. “For calling me. For telling me about your dream. For meeting me here.”

“I’d meet you anywhere.” The words were a vow, spoken fervently and fiercely.

Everyone had demons. Gideon’s were caged by his iron will when he was awake, but when he slept they tormented him in violent, vicious nightmares. We had so much in common, but the abuse in our childhoods was a shared trauma that both drew us together and pushed us apart. It made me fight harder. Our abusers had taken too much away from us already.

“Eva… You’re the only force on earth that can keep me away.”

“Thank you for that, too,” I murmured, my chest tight. “I know it wasn’t easy for you to give me space, but we needed it. And I know I pushed you hard…”

“Too hard.”

My mouth curved at the quick bite of ice in his words. Gideon wasn’t a man used to being denied what he wanted. “I know. And you let me, because you love me.”

“It’s more than love.” His hands banded my wrists, tightening in the way that made everything inside me surrender.

I nodded, no longer afraid to admit that we needed each other in a way some would consider unhealthy. It was who we were, what we had. And it was precious.

“We’ll drive to Dr. Petersen’s together.” He said the words with unmistakable command, but his gaze searched mine as if he’d asked a question.

“You’re so bossy,” I teased, wanting us to leave each other feeling good. Hopeful. Our weekly therapy appointment with Dr. Lyle Petersen was only hours away, and it couldn’t have been more opportunely scheduled. We’d turned a corner. We could use a little help in figuring what our next steps should be from here.

His hands circled my waist. “You love it.”

I reached for the hem of his shirt, fisting the soft jersey. “I love you.”

“Eva.” His arms came tight and sure around me, his shuddered breath hot on my neck. Manhattan surrounded us but couldn’t intrude. When we were together, there was nothing else.

A low sound of hunger left me, everything inside me that yearned and craved him shivering with delight that he was once again pressed against me. I breathed him in with deep inhalations, my fingers kneading into the rigid muscles of his back. The rush that slid through me was heady. I was addicted to him—heart, soul, and body—and I’d gone days without my fix, leaving me shaky and off-balance, unable to function properly.

He engulfed me, his body so much bigger and harder than mine. I felt safe in his embrace, cherished and protected. Nothing could touch me or hurt me when he was holding me. I wanted him to feel that same sense of security with me. I needed him to know that he could drop his guard, take a breath, and I could protect us both.

I had to be stronger. Smarter. Scarier. We had enemies, and Gideon was dealing with them on his own. It was innate to him to be protective; it was one of his traits I deeply admired. But I had to start showing people that I could be as formidable an adversary as my husband.

More important, I had to prove it to Gideon.

Leaning into him, I absorbed his warmth. His love. “I’ll see you at five, ace.”

“Not a minute later,” he ordered gruffly.

I laughed despite myself, infatuated with every rough-edged facet of him. “Or what?”

Pulling back, he gave me a look that made my toes curl. “Or I come get you.”

Writing Tips Shared by Sylvia Day and Reveal Her Favorite Book Ever

Sylvia Day, #1 Best Selling Penguin author of the last five years. She has written twenty award-winning novels. With her latest book, Captivated By You (Crossfire Series Book 4), glamourmagazine.co.uk sat down with the author to get her tips for budding writers, and whether her books will be turned into films.

From the interviews, we know the facts:

  • Sylvia Day favorite book genre: Romance
  • Sylvia Day favorite book when a kid: Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic (by Shel Silverstein)
  • Sylvia Day favorite book ever: The Fifth Favor by Shelby Reed
  • And Having dinner with friends is the best way to relax after writing

Do you have a favourite EVER book?

The Fifth Favor by Shelby Reed.

What are you most proud of in your career?

Creatively, that it's been 11 years so far and I still have so much left to write! Professionally, it's that I've strategized well and seen that pay off.

Have you ever seen fans reading your books - does it feel weird?

Yes, it's a bit awkward, mostly because I don't want to intrude on the reader's experience with the book by being recognized. I try to hurry off before that happens.

Any hints at your next writing project?

My next project is the Blacklist series, which follows a young couple over two books and a span of years-the first time they try to build a relationship and later on, when they try again after failing the first time.

Would you want your books turned into a film?

My Crossfire series is being developed for premium cable television and I think that's a wonderful medium for the story, since there is a large ensemble of characters and a lot of ground to cover.

What's the biggest misconception people have about romance novels?

That they're simple boy-meets-girl stories or that they're anything like the old "bodice-ripper" style of novel, which has been dead for many decades now.

What are the key three things to writing a good romance novel?

Conflict, character arcs, and emotional impact.

Is writing good s*x scenes one of the most difficult forms of writing?

Good s*x scenes are difficult to write, yes. The number one purpose of writing one is to move the character arcs forward. That takes a lot of time and consideration.

Why did you decide to go into this genre?

Because it's my favorite genre to read!

Who would you love to know reads your books?

Henry Cavill

What's the nicest thing a fan has told you?

That my work has positively impacted their life. They've gone back to school, left a bad or abusive relationship, starting nurturing themselves, had a baby… I write books to entertain. When I'm told that something I've written has changed the direction of a reader's life in a profound way, it humbles me.

What do you like to read?

Everything, but my favorite genre is romance.

Where do you write?

I write everywhere. I'm answering these questions on a plane.

What's your writing schedule?

Due to the demands of family and career, I don't have set writing times. I write when I can, wherever I can, daily.

Do you have any music to write by?

I can't write to music, no. It has to be quiet when I'm writing or I can't hear the characters talk to me.

Who would play your main characters in the television show?

For the Crossfire series, I would say Henry Cavill and Scarlet Johansson, but I'm sure whoever the producers choose for the show will be wonderful!

What's the best advice you were ever given?

You don't have to do it all, but what you do accomplish, do it well.

What was your favourite book when you were a kid?

Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic, both by Shel Silverstein.

Do you have a favourite EVER book?

The Fifth Favor by Shelby Reed.

What are you reading right now?

Olivia Gates' latest.

How long does it take you to write a book?

Depends on the book. I've written some in as little as four weeks and others have taken over a year.

Do you have any top tips for aspiring authors?

Don't be in a rush to publish. Discover your style and voice first, learn what your strengths are, your weaknesses. I urge aspiring writers to write three full-length novels before contemplating publication.

What's the best way to relax after writing?

Having dinner with friends.

How do you get inspiration for your books?

Everywhere. Living is a constant source of inspiration.

Do your characters ever do things you weren't expecting?

All the time. I never know where they're going to take me or how a story will end until I get there.

What's the one thing to remember when you're writing a novel?

Take your time, however long the book needs. I've seen a lot of promising careers go into decline because writers succumbed to the pressure to write faster than was comfortable for them or the story. Readers want a good book; it's a writer's job to give it to them.

Gideon calls me his angel, but he's the miracle in my life. My gorgeous, wounded warrior, so determined to slay my demons while refusing to face his own.

Captivated by You Sylvia Day Review

You know, books one and two were so very incredible, and in comparison, book three was a let down in quality. I had high hopes for book four. I mean the author had 18 months to redeem the story and get it back on track. I'm sorry to say, that did not happen.

If you are a Crossfire fan, of course you are going to read this book. I suggest borrowing it.

If you are a Sylvia Day fan, put it way down on your 'want to read' list. Read something else of hers, or just re-read BARED TO YOU and REFLECTED IN YOU.

If you are a casual fan, just skip this one. If this story is SOMEHOW redeemed in book five (unlikely, and probably not in my lifetime), you can always pick it up again then.

For myself, I'm so sorry that such a compellingly great love story has become an epic-ly long disaster. It could have been the best, and now it's not. -amazon

Reflected in You Sylvia Day Review

"You were with me. The whole time. There wasn't a second that passed when you weren't on my mind. You own me, Eva. Wherever I am, whatever I'm doing, I belong to you."

Just like you, I have been waiting patiently for the third (and i thought final) installment to the Crossfire series. Now don't laugh at me, but I had it on my calender with a reminder alert ever since I found out what the release date was going to be. Yes, I'm THAT big of a nerd! This series definitely was at the top of my "favorite things" list; favorite author, favorite series, favorite book boyfriend." With Entwined with You, Sylvia Day gave us more, more, more! More intensity, more s*xual heat, more love, and more frustrations. Even though Entwined with You wasn't my favorite out of the series, it still rocked my world!

Oh Gideon and Eva! Your love for each other scares the living s*** out of me! Seriously, just when I think, oh god, too intense, too intense, I sit back and think to myself, I want that for myself! I want to love someone so much, that it physically hurts when you are not with them. I want someone to love me so much that they will drop everything and anything to be by my side, protect me from all the evil in the world, and just be my world. THAT my friends is exactly the kind of love that Gideon and Eva share. THAT is the kind of love that takes people forever to find, the other half of themselves.

"Day One of my life was the day I met you."

Entwined with You picks up where Reflected in You, Crossfire #2, ended, the aftermath of the bombshell that was dropped! To find out the length that Gideon would go through to protect Eva from her past astonishes me. These two both have pasts that have scarred them in some way, and they both just want to take on the other's pain, it's such a beautiful thing.

"We are totally dysfunctional." "I prefer 'selectively deviant.' But we'll keep that to ourselves."

Looking from the outside in, some people might say that Gideon and Eva's relationship is unhealthy, or it's like a train wreck waiting to happen. It might be all that, but you can't argue that when they get together, they are HOT as HELL! Their s*xual encounters are sometimes hot and heavy, and other times they are soft and tender. There is a scene in one of the clubs that Gideon owns....WOW! It's THAT good! Good enough, that you just might need a cold shower afterwards. So HOT in fact, I read the scene over and over again! Don't judge me! *smirks*

I want to give a little shout-out to my other favorite couple Mark and Steven. Mark is Eva's boss, and I am SO jealous of the working relationship they have with each other by the way! Steven is Mark's boyfriend and they are SO CUTE together it kills me! Big things in store for these guys!

All in all, Sylvia Day rocked this book! I was a good girl and stayed away from any kind of reviews until I finished the book, so I was one of those readers that said WHAT THE HELL?! at the end of Entwined with You. After learning that there were going to be more installments, I was so THRILLED! I can't get enough of this gut wrenching, emotionally exhausting, sexy roller coaster ride! Bring it on woman! I need more answers!!!

"If souls could be mated with wishes, ours would be inextricably entwined."-amazon
